1. file a claim at TWIA by filling out a form and email to them (there web site is www.twia.org)
2. take pictures of your damage (if not yet done so)
3. do not make permanent repairs before the adjuster comes in. The decision from TWIA takes 4-6 weeks after the adjuster's visit.
4. follow your neighbours while dealing with wet cartpet, chances are the same adjuster is going to look at all homes in the area.
5. You may split claims (e.g. roof, interior structure damage, carpet): different adjusters will come. Find a good contractor who is willing to deal with insurance company and who do the best job. Don't compromise on quality of work by choosing a small/cheap contractor (a mistake we tend to make).
6. Try to register using FEMA website. FEMA director encourage you to register, whether you think you qualify or not. If you have damage, FEMA may pay some portion which insurance may not cover, and hotels, food, gas and other expenses while you flee hurricane.
